As a visual artist, I create by combining my skills in front of the camera and behind the lens. "I am Fiona Jane" is a lookbook of the different sides of me. As the makeup artist, model, hair stylist, photographer, and director, cultivating each scene, while it can be empowering, sometimes is lonely. Wearing many hats means knowing when to ask for help, and I am thankful for my friends who have assisted me in taking my creative energy and passion and transforming it into art.

Phoenix is one of the strongest and loving women I know and I wanted to photograph her in all her quiet determination and beauty. She is strength, she is love, she is my inspiration.

As a visual artist, creating this editorial was a form of catharsis. I escaped to my studio to manifest a place where I could safely dream and exist in peace. • Inaugural Issue - July 2020

Skin Deep is a self-portrait series where the subject is loving my body for what it is. We often say that beauty is “skin deep” but body acceptance is more than loving the skin you are born with. Skin Deep uses balanced photographs to represent harmony and soft lighting to represent the softer side of being a woman. The textures represented in skin bring emphasis to the flaws that I have accepted which most people do not notice as imperfections. Pink is used as an iconic background to enhance softness and feminine energy.

The inspiration for Skin Deep is my ongoing journey to self-love. As a woman, I have spent most of my life being shamed for my body. Curves are a double-edged sword for women. I was taught that rolls and flab are unsightly and are not a naturally occurring phenomena. I have learned that any pouch, flab or seemingly lack of muscle tone in a body part is an indication of my lack of physical attraction to the opposite sex, my laziness, or my bad luck with genetics. If our breasts are large, we are too sexy and provocative. If our breasts are small, we are boy-like, child-like, and not womanly enough. If we have large pores, uneven skin, stretch marks or hair on our body parts we must take action to remove these unwanted traits. Skin Deep is the artist response to what I am unlearning as an adult and what I want to share with other women.
